Abstract

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to examine the clinical practice experience of third- and fourth-year nursing students in junior colleges in an effort to shed light on the nature of the meaning of their experiences to have a profound understanding of it.
Methods : The subjects in this study were 20 selected juniors and seniors who majored in nursing science in 10 junior colleges across the nation. The students had experience of practice in adult health nursing, women¡¯s health nursing, child health nursing and gerontological nursing. In-depth interviews were conducted to gather data on their experiences of practice from July 21 to August 6, 2017. The collected data were analyzed by Colaizzi¡¯s method.
Results : 36 meanings were constructed, and 13 themes and six theme clusters were extracted: ¡°Ambivalence about field practice,¡± ¡°confused identity,¡± ¡°lack of hands-on nursing experience and diversity,¡± ¡°unfriendly environments for practice,¡± ¡°being on the way to becoming a nurse,¡± and ¡°practical education of higher quality is desperately needed.¡±
Conclusion : Given the findings of the study, how to step up the development of clinical practice in junior colleges should carefully be considered, and the development and application of programs on clinical practice process are required to improve the qualifications of nursing college students as future professional nurses.
